Whittle Programmed Painting were tasked with painting the external steelwork at Derby University Learning Centre as the existing paint and steelwork were showing signs of bad deterioration.
On the staircase a 500psi portable water blaster with a rotary head was used to remove all loose paint and deleterious matter from the surfaces. Numerous access problems were caused due to the ground sloping and the height being beyond normal mobile platform capability. A track mounted 1250AJ machine was hired in to do the higher parts and an 85 foot access machine to do the remainder.
All paint used on the project was supplied by Tikurilla - ST200 patch coat plus a patch coat of ST300 followed by one full coat of ST300, and a final top coat of Temadur 50 two pack semi gloss polyurethane. This project was used by Tikurilla as a case study.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Whittle Programmed Painting. The decoration of the Library high level steelwork posed the University of Derby a number of problems; both sides of the building were over a main pedestrian thoroughfare into the University atrium area, and these external works had to be carried out during term time too. The steelwork was at a height which also required specialist access machinery as the ground was sloping. The contract was carried out with no interruption, the painters did not cause any disruption whilst on site and the paint still looks good 12 months after the completion of the painting.
