Whittle Programmed Painting were recently tasked with painting the existing steelwork to the perimeter plus painting to the whole of the galvanised roof steelwork of Pride Park Stadium, home of top Championship Club Derby County. The Company worked closely with Dulux Paints who formulated a specification based on the past materials used which was Metalshield. There was in total 6500m2 of existing steel to be 2 coated and 9500m2 of steel to be 3 coated to the roof - a mammoth task to be completed before the start of the current season 2016/2017.
The work was commenced on Monday 9th May 2016, with a total of five men on site. This was gradually built up to a total of eleven men at any one time. There was lots of high level work to be completed and we had a total of four machines on site, a 20 metre stick boom, a 28 metre articulated boom, and two Z 135 machines to reach up and over the roof.
Whilst our work was in progress the pitch was being renewed, which involved removal of all the substrate from the pitch on to the car park and renewal of the same to form the new pitch. In addition new LED floodlights were being installed, plus the new Chairman had the boardroom moved to overlook the pitch. With multiple tasks on-going at the same time and periods of restricted access there could have been a real risk of the project overrunning.
However work was finished two weeks ahead of schedule, likewise the pitch and all other subsequent works also finished on time thanks to meticulous planning and regular progress meetings held bi-weekly with Derby County FC and their Architect.
Martin Smith the stadium engineer said, “What a great job and completed within the time frame. The black roof and white perimeter looks great“.
Architect Matthew Montague BA(Hons) DipArch RIBA ACA said “Thanks Peter, job well done”.
The work had previously been carried out by Whittle on our industry leading 7 year programmed maintenance contract (completed in 2015) and Derby County had no hesitation in renewing on the same basis.
